Although some people refer to wallpapering as an art, it isn’t a skill that has to be developed over many years. In fact most people manage to do a good job on their first attempt and after a few rooms, you could almost be considered an expert. However when it comes to hanging wallpaper, the success if not only due to common sense and attention to detail, but is also down to the tools you use. One of the main tools that you will require are the right brushes for wallpaper. In this guide we take a look at how to choose the right wallpaper brushes and wallpaper rollers to get the job done. Different Types of Wallpaper Brushes There are a wide range of wallpaper brushes available to buy and you need to ensure you get the correct one for your needs. First it’s important to differentiate that wallpaper brushes are not the same as paint brushes. The main difference is that wallpaper brushes tend to have softer bristles. This is because wallpaper brushes will be used to spread adhesive onto the back of lining papers and wallpapers in an even manner, without causing damage to the wallpaper itself. If a paint brush is used, the adhesive is unlikely to be as well spread which can cause lumps when the wallpaper is hung. Also, firmer bristles may damage the wallpaper, ruining a whole length which can be costly. There are two general types of brushes for wallpaper. The first is to apply the adhesive to either the wallpaper or directly onto the wall. These typically have soft, acrylic bristles which are easy to keep clean. The second type are even softer and usually have fibre bristles. These are designed to smooth wallpaper once it is on the wall to remove any air bubbles that may form during the hanging process. Wallpaper Rollers Some people opt to use a wallpaper roller instead of a wallpaper brush when it comes to DIY wallpapering. Primarily a roller is used in a similar way to a brush in that it applies a thin, even layer of wallpaper paste to the wallpaper or directly onto the wall in order to make hanging the wallpaper as easy as possible. Wallpaper rollers typically come in a similar format although different sizes are available. Larger rollers are perfect for spreading paste across walls for quicker hanging whilst smaller rollers are ideal for more precision pasting such as hanging wallpaper borders or adding extra adhesive to edges or corners of a room.  Key Things to Look For When Buying Wallpaper Rollers and Brushes There are a few key considerations when buying wallpaper brushes and rollers. The first is the quality. This is especially important when it comes to choosing a wallpaper brush for spreading adhesive as you want to ensure that the adhesive is spread in a uniform way and without bristles being lost in the process. A good quality brush or roller will also be easy to clean and can be used again in the future a number of times for other DIY wallpapering projects. The second consideration is price. As with all decorating tools, wallpaper brushes and rollers will come as various price points. Typically the lower priced lines are poorer quality than the higher prices so if money is an issue, it’s always recommended to choose a mid-price range brush to ensure good value for money.
