When your walls or ceilings are suffering from cracks, roughness, unevenness, or flakiness it can be difficult to know exactly what to do with them! Should you go to the expense of re-skimming? Try a DIY smooth-over product? Or spend hours filling and sanding?  All of these options are messy, inconvenient (yes you will have to remove all your furniture from the room!) and some are expensive or very time consuming as well. Luckily, there are other options available that are quicker, easier and far less messy and will leave you with perfectly smooth walls that are ready for painting or wallpapering. 1. Double Lining Your Walls One of the cheapest options to get smooth walls is to double line your walls or ceilings with a thick grade of lining paper such as 1700 or 2000. These grades of lining paper are thick enough to cover many minor imperfections. Though the walls will normally require some preparation in the way of filling and sanding beforehand, it’s a quick and easy way to get smooth walls that’s also very inexpensive. 2. Using “Padded” Wall Liners If you want to do away with filling and sanding altogether, another popular option is to use one of the extra thick “padded” types of lining paper such as Wallrock Thermal Liner or Insulating Lining Paper. They consist of a thick polystyrene-type material, bonded to a non-woven lining paper and easily smooth out and strengthen rough, cracked or damaged surfaces. They are also good at covering medium textured wallpapers, woodchip and artex. Of course you won’t just get the benefit of smooth walls if you decide to use one these products – you’ll also find your home is much warmer, your energy bills will be reduced, there’ll be less condensation and it will be quieter too. Adhesive That Fills & Bonds Damaged Walls Wallrock Thermal Liner Adhesive is used to hang many of the specialist wall liners available at GoWallpaper such as the two mentioned above. It is a specially formulated adhesive that acts as an all-in-one filler, bond coat and adhesive which means that in most cases filling and sanding is not required at all. 3. Specialist Wall Smoothing Primers There are two specialist wall primers that are particularly good for smoothing out specific types of wall problems. Zinsser GARDZ is for use on porous surfaces and will repair torn or peeling plasterboard or wallpaper and also prevents old wallpaper paste from leaching into new paintwork. For cracked, flaky or peeling paint surfaces Zinsser Peel Stop is particularly good as it fixes down damaged surfaces, smoothes them out and stops the problem recurring. So there we have it. Three extra options for achieving lovely smooth walls quickly. Which one will you choose?
