For those new to the wallpapering scene, deciding on the pattern, colour or style of wallpaper can be difficult enough and when you add into the mix the array of different types of wallpaper such as blown vinyl, washable, embossed and flocked, it suddenly becomes that much harder to decide what is right for you and your home. Here we look at five of the most common wallpaper types to help you dodge the mine-field of DIY decorating projects:
Lining Paper
Producing flat, flawless walls with wallpaper isn’t all in the finishing. There is a certain amount of preparation to do too. Lining paper is an undergarment of wallpapers if you like which aims to reduce the appearance of flaws and smooth and even them ready for wallpaper application. As with wallpaper, there are a number of different types of lining paper available and the most popular at the moment are thermal lining papers which help to regulate the temperature of the room, and sound insulating lining paper – ideal for those with close neighbours.
Woodchip Wallpaper
Very popular in the 80s and 90s and currently making a come-back, woodchip wallpaper is possibly one of the most well-known wallpaper types. It is manufactured using small chips of wood, hence the name, and finished with basic plain wallpaper. As it provides a textured finish, it is ideal for disguising plastering imperfections whilst adding subtle texture to the walls. Paintable and durable, it’s a good choice for any room.
Embossed Wallpaper
Possibly the best known embossed wallpaper brand is Anaglypta. Embossed wallpaper features a textured pattern which can be something simple like a geometric pattern or more distinctive like damask style designs. They are usually plain in colour, making them ideal for painting over and some come with a subtle colour. Highly durable, they are ideal for high traffic areas of the home like the hallway or stairs. Like woodchip, they are also ideal for disguising wall imperfections.
Blown Vinyl Wallpaper
Blown Vinyl Wallpaper is similar in design to embossed wallpaper designs. However instead of having a paper finish, they feature a vinyl plastic coating. This means that they cannot be over painted but does offer them as an extra layer of durability. Due to their nature, blown vinyl wallpaper often features beautiful patterns and comes coloured for a great look.
Flocked Wallpaper
Flocked wallpaper is probably one of the most traditional styles of wallpaper yet is today perhaps referred to as a luxury wallpaper, with price tags to match. Flocked Wallpaper has the unique feature of including fibres which create the look and feel of velvet. They are perfect for adding that tactile touch to any room and most people can’t help but touch flocked wallpaper as they pass by. Particularly well suited to formal living or dining rooms, they add a look of grandeur although can often be overpowering if dark colours are selected.
