Period properties not only come with character, but also with a series of quirks that you are likely to have to overcome as part of either the restoration or renovation process. Here we look at a number of the most common quirks that period properties offer and how the Erfurt Mav Wallrock range has been designed to overcome them.
Uneven Walls
Uneven walls are a common problem in older style properties. This can be due to a number of reasons including subsidence, general earth movement and out-dated plastering techniques. All of these can cause cracks to walls, pits and other irregularities which you just wouldn’t find in a more modern home.
Although re-plastering can offer a long term solution to uneven walls, it can be a costly exercise. Luckily Erfurt Mav has identified the problem and developed a number of products that can be used to address the issue. If walls aren’t too badly damaged then Wallrock Fibreliners can help resolve the problem. Made from heavy duty lining paper, they can help to smooth uneven walls, providing a friendlier surface for Wallrock wallpaper or painting. For walls that are in worse shape, Wallrock Superglass is perfect. This lining paper is made from fibreglass with helps to strengthen and protect walls, stopping further damage from occurring whilst levelling out imperfections. Whilst both of these products have been designed for interior use, Erfurt Mav also has a solution for uneven external walls too – Wallrock Flexomuir, a great alternative to re-rendering.
Cold Walls
Insulation wasn’t a well-known remedy to efficient heating when most period properties were built. This means that many period properties don’t have double layer walls so there is no scope to add wall insulation. Adding additional internal walling can not only be time-consuming and expensive but can also lead to a loss of living space. An alternative is Erfurt Mav’s Wallrock Thermal Liners. These are basically heavy duty lining papers which include a layer of polystyrene, designed to insulate the walls. Thermal lining paper works in two ways, firstly it helps to insulate from external cold air. Secondly it helps to retain heat in a room, making it not only more efficient to heat but also quicker to warm up too – a win-win situation for reducing energy bills.
Difficult to Decorate
Period properties are notoriously difficult to decorate, particularly due to the non-squareness of the rooms and the uneven wall surfaces. The Wallrock Texture range is the perfect solution. These heavily textured wallpapers help to detract from non-standard walls and are also more discerning when it comes to uneven walls. The Wallrock Trend range offers a slightly more subtle solution with a series of on-trend softly textured finishes which are ideal for use in period properties.
Whatever your decorating nightmare, the Wallrock range from Erfurt Mav have the perfect solutions for you.
