For those who have considered but never actually attempted to hang wallpaper, you might be terrified by the prospect. Everyone has heard of those awful horror stories of applying wallpaper paste to wallpaper and it curling up on itself, ruining the length. Or those where a friend has hung a room with wallpaper only to come back a couple of hours later to find that each piece had peeled off and then lay crumbled on the carpet. The truth is that most of these stories are elaborations on the odd mishap whilst wallpapering. Although wallpapering does require a little know how, it’s easy to learn. Plus in the last few years, wallpaper adhesive manufacturers have continued to develop wallpaper pastes that make the process of DIY wallpapering as easy as possible.
The main factor when it comes to hanging wallpaper yourself at home is to decide whether to use ready mixed wallpaper paste or whether to mix your own wallpaper adhesive. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Ready Mixed Wallpaper Paste
Ready mixed wallpaper paste has the main advantage that it can be used straight from the tub without you having to do anything. This makes it much quicker to get started on your wallpapering as you don’t have to measure out any water or spend time mixing the power to the right consistency. This leads to the next advantage, the fact that ready mixed wallpaper paste has already been made to the right consistency for applying wallpaper to you walls. It is therefore going to hold the wallpaper in place without any problems. Finally left over ready mixed wallpaper adhesive can be stored for future use if not needed at the time.
As well as advantages, there are also disadvantages to buying ready mixed wallpaper adhesive. The first is that it generally comes in large tubs which makes it heavy to lift, causing issues when trying to get the wallpaper paste home. The second disadvantage is that ready mixed wallpaper adhesive is harder to store due to its bulk in comparison to wallpaper paste mix. Finally, ready mixed wallpaper paste is typically more expensive than wallpaper paste sachets that you mix at home yourself.
Wallpaper Paste Powder
Wallpaper paste powder, also sometimes referred to as wallpaper paste sachets or granules, is generally cheaper than ready mixed wallpaper paste, giving you the chance to save money. It is also easier to carry and easier to transport than tubs of pre-mixed wallpaper paste. The final advantage is that wallpaper powder paste can easily be stored in its pre-mixed form without taking up too much space.
Wallpaper paste powder also has a number of disadvantages. The first is that you have to carefully prepare it using the right amount of water to create the correct consistency for it to hang wallpaper properly. If too much water is added, the whole batch is ruined and you have to start again. Another disadvantage to mix-your-own wallpaper adhesive is that once mixed, it will not store well.
It’s important to note that if used correctly, both forms of wallpaper adhesive will ensure that your wallpaper stays put on your walls and the choice between ready mixed and mix-your-own is down to personal preference.
