Ask any DIY professional and they’ll have heard of, and probably used, products made by Zinsser. Over many years they’ve built a reputation for developing solutions to a wide range of DIY decorating problems. Let’s have a look at how some of their product and be a help to you. So what are primers? Products that are designed to prepare walls, ceilings, tiles or other surfaces for treating or decorating are collected under the umbrella term primers. Zinsser produce a number of specialized primers, each designed for different types of walls and situations. For stained surfaces Zinsser Cover Stain Primer is designed for surfaces stained by things such as water, nicotine, graffiti, rust or mildew. It ‘locks in’ the stains, which might otherwise leach into new layers or paint or wallpaper. For flaky, peeling or cracked painted surfaces If you have walls that have paint that is peeling off, cracked or flaking, it’s not a good idea to apply a fresh layer of paint straight on top of it. In this situation using Zinsser Peel Stop Primer will prepare the wall by creating a flat, smooth surface. It can be applied to plaster, wood, cement, metal, even external surfaces. For damp surfaces Mould can often be a problem in rooms where condensation is common, typically laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. But if you have mould on any walls, inside or out, then sung Zinsser BullsEye 123 Primer will seal in mould staining, stopping it leaching into future layers of paint or wallpaper. For especially damp surfaces Zinsser BullsEye 123 Plus Primer is a stronger variant of Zinsser’s anti-mould primer and can be used on most surfaces. Now what about sealants? Sealer can be used on porous surfaces to make them ready for painting onto. Zinsser Grandz is designed to be used on a range of porous surfaces – plaster, plasterboard, wallpaper, lining paper or filler.
